Meet the author

Tu Weixin

A marketer and marketing trainer based in Shenzhen, who arrived with two hundred yuan and built a business by writing to her customers every day.

She does not write for a general audience. She writes for the business owners who pay to study with her, which is why the chapters read like notes from a hard teacher rather than a textbook. This book collects fifty-one of those lessons: who to sell to, who to walk away from, what to charge, and why the busiest people are so often the poorest.

About the book

There is no theory in it and no case-study padding. Each chapter is a numbered list of observations, written in the first person, that you can read in ten minutes and argue with for a week. The advice is specific enough to act on tomorrow and blunt enough that some readers will put it down.

The English edition keeps the author’s voice, her examples and her opinions, including the ones many readers will disagree with. Sums are in Chinese yuan unless stated otherwise, and the examples reflect the Chinese market at the time of writing.

Why people read it

What you get for ten minutes a chapter

  • Who to sell to

Most of the book is about choosing customers, not chasing them. It will change who you say no to.

  • Pricing without apology

Why cheap customers cost the most, and how the author moved to high-end clients only.

  • A marketing system you can run alone

Daily writing, follow-up, after-sale service. No team, no ad budget.

  • Ten minutes a chapter

Numbered, short, blunt. Read one chapter, argue with it all week.

Chapter 1

Making Money Was Never About Getting Rich Overnight

The first rule sets the tone for the other fifty: value first, appearances last.

Making money comes down to a way of thinking and relentless doing. Work, work, work. What did online sellers rely on to make money in the old days? Looking rich. What do they rely on now? Delivering value.

Never judge a person’s true character or true wealth by what they buy. Making money was never about getting rich overnight. For ordinary people like us it is a marathon, long and grinding, and what the race tests is persistence, resolve, brains, thinking, and breadth of experience.
